Nearly
a native to Colorado, Skye Downing began her illustrious musical
career singing the National Anthem at the opening of the Sabaki
Tournament in Denver in 1993. She continued to sing The Anthem several
times during the Olympics Festival’s weightlifting and wrestling
competitions in the early 1990’s. It was in her late teens
however, while singing backup in a band called On Air, that she
"discovered her voice". Her talent and charisma were soon
apparent and she was snatched up by another local act, Hurdy
Gurdy, to sing lead.
The folk-rock scene in Boulder at the time wasn’t quite enough
for this up and coming diva. She moved on to Dallas in 1995 and
appropriately dove into singing the blues. She sat in with many
local acts - from The Tony Hakim jazz band to a rock band
named Carfire.
By 1999, Skye was restless again. She moved to San Diego in search
of a healthier lifestyle. Immediately immersed in the local music
scene, Skye met some jazz-heads and began a classic jazz project
entitled Hot Water Music. They scored a house gig on Thursdays
at a place called 713 Wine Bar in the Gaslamp District.
The other side of Skye’s personality was playing in a hard
rock/rap core band called Method at venues such as Winston’s,
Blind Melon’s and The Casbah. Besides these two groups, she
found the time to sit in with the famed impersonator Gary Shuffler
in both a Queen cover project and a David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust project.
She also sat in with blues/swing cat - Billy Watson and the
International Silver String Submarine Band.
After soul searching in Southern California, Skye decided to move
back to Colorado. She immediately was asked to sing backup vocals
on Jude Ponds’ new release Songs from a Restless
Sleeper. Hazel Miller asks her to sit in every time Skye shows
up at a gig. “Skye sings with me because I need what she gives!
She is a Diva waiting to be discovered.” –

Skye heads up her own blues cover project The Skye Downing Band,
sings regularly with Jockomo - a Zydeco/Blues/Swing/& Funk band,
throws in a periodic Jazz gig and occasionally subs in with Girls
on Top
Most recently, Sky has had the great priviledge of singing a couple
of tunes with the legendary Henry Butler. She has graced the stages
of many bands in Colorado such as: The Hazel Miller Band, Craig
Maierhofer, On the Planet, Dana Kyle Stokes, Bluezhouse, Bone Ready,
Jude Ponds,
Black Dog, Possum Logic, and Lionel Young. She has also had
the pleasure of singing with the following local artists: Patrick
LaTella, Jacques Armand, Michael O’Neal, Mark Diamond,
Andy Weyl, Adam Schalke, Chris Engleman, Robert Schlesinger, Eduardo
‘Bijoux’ Barbosa, Dan Geisler, Linda Lewellyn, Deniz
Davis, Rick Chance, Chris Misner, Eric Gunnison and many more.
